The Otter

Polish version

Fern leaves furled above my head blocking nearly all the light. Just very few sunny trails managed to shine through the foliage, creating golden spots on the forest bed. I arrived at the lake. The water was calm, and there was an otter laying on a mossy rock. She played with a pebble by throwing it between her paws. She didn’t look at it at all, yet always caught it perfectly. Simon the cat

Polish version

At nights Simon turned into a cat. It was a curse put ages ago on his male ancestors. When he was a little boy it felt so natural and obvious and he was immensely surprised when he eventually found out that not all men turn into cats. The curse was so old that nobody remembered who and what cause were behind it. If somebody investigated its origins, then it probably could be removed. However, the malediction was not considered a nuisance, rather, it was a unique family secret, which made its members special. Czytaj dalej

Alienation

Polish version

He coughed, and it made me jump. It was not his voice. I looked his way and indeed, there was a stranger sitting on the couch, reading a newspaper. I looked around the room – there was nothing familiar in it either. The table, chairs, the painting on the wall – I was looking at these things for the first time. I held my breath for a moment and I closed my eyes, but when I opened them again, everything was still bizarrely alien. How could I not notice that before? I have been here with him since I opened my eyes in the morning. I managed to prepare and serve him breakfast, I washed the dishes and only when I was making tea, this unpleasant sensation of alienation hit me. Czytaj dalej
